I have been playing around with getting a LastOS version of CachyOS as an offline install, just to make it more reliable and usable without needing to go online. I have integrated wine and the steam installer (It will have to download about 600mb in the background before it opens (it doesn't show anything is happening while it does this (on VM anyway), so if you want to watch it just open a terminal and type steam, you can see the progress.

I include LLStore by default and it gets ran on first login to a newly created user. I have integrated some SDL2 libraries to allow more older titles to run.

This allows you to have a OS with KDE, allowing Wayland by default - supporting Multiple screens, HDR, VRR and Fractional Scaling. I made this as I was fed up waiting for Mint v23 to come out in December, I am pretty sure I'll go back to mint once December comes around, but if I get cachy to behave on my main PC, I might not, depends if updates break things or I am unable to customise it the way I want.

So over the next few months I'll be updating all the games, apps etc in LLStore to work perfectly with CachyOS, as it stands about 75% of the stuff in LLStore will work perfect.

If there is any interest in this I'll give it more time and get it done sooner, else I'll just keep tinkering away in the background.

keep in mind you'll have to install all the tool runtimes to get the best results, I haven't fully integrated them yet (wasn't sure how big the base was going to turn out, so left them manual)
 
Yes, getting the necessary runtimes to automatically integrate even into Windows is a challenging task. :confused:
 
I've done a new one and Keen Game works now, Gods Deluxe - libfuse.so.2 (Not usable in cachyos), Rick Dangerous - libSDL-1.2.0 doesn't start - the rest worked fine, so instead of releasing a new beta, I'll just keep recommending you install the Runtimes and what will work will work anyway, I just made it less work out of the box. I'll get it installed on my main PC so I can continue to make it better and then release a final (eventually, I have to use it to find what needs to be improved, so will be a while, but I miss having 2 screens and proper Fractional scaling), so it'll be before Mint v23 in December, as I hope to go back to it. I am not a big fan of KDE, but it's what works best with CachyOS (that and gnome), so we'll see, I might not want to go back if I get it all right ;) It is ARCH BTW.

great , keep up the awesome work . question , integrating the features of LastOS into arch , will it make it better ? i mean since arch is more versatile than debian but not as user friendly :)
 
CachyOS and Arch in general is fine once configured. but I failed even installing it to my main PC (I have 12 Disks of various types attached though).

What I did spot though is if you try to boot cachy from Ventoy it changes the mount point (meaning it fails to install), even after I modified it on the Live Booted OS to install, then the GRUB boot menu failed to work. - So in the end, I still prefer Mint for it's "just works" approach. so it's not that Cachy is harder, just if you don't get it right out of the box, it takes a lot of terminal work to get it to behave. Yet Mint has GUI tools for even boot repairs, which Arch requires manually putting in commands a few at a time with custom drive paths etc - so not fun IMO.

I am confident that once Mint releases in December it'll be caught up to Arch in terms of performance and features. So I am just going to wait it out myself. I am happy enough on x11 with one 4k screen at 200% scaling (for now), but once Wayland is stable, I'll be back to dual screens at 175% as that is the same as I ran windows before I switched to Linux.

so short answer, yes, it's just less user friendly to a general user (like myself), so new users would probably not enjoy it, unless its methods click for you. or if you use AI chatbots to get answers.
 
I know I have been in windows for my whole life and I can only imagine what really knowing what a good linux distro is like . I have tried to get that simple point and click and gaming linux but it is not there . I feel for all the true old school linux devs and the amount of time to " try " to get these hardware vendors to support linux is just crazy .

Why is a server OS linux based ??

I am going to say @Glenn , keep it up . I may go to linux in the next year or so as to when I find I am done with all the OS mod stuff , my paid for games is more what I do not do now after the fire , yea another part of my life I have to deal with but I am moving along like a train wreck in my mind LMAO . I will simpley move to just streaming only in linux . no games that is it , DONE .

When I installed iMac 2015 model last year, I was able to scale up desktop but some aps like notably wine configuration panel were not scaled which rendered them unusable. The monitor of that imac is 5k on 27" screen but even when it drops down to 3500x.... something resolution (I think) in Linux, that still makes everything too tiny on the screen. Will try this CachyOS you made and if it fails to install, I will wait till Mint 23 release.
